Probleemstelling

Surgeons currently face a significant challenge: they must rely on 2D imaging technology for surgery, requiring them to mentally convert these images into 3D for accurate planning and execution of surgeries. This process is not only difficult and inefficient but also prone to errors. The World Health Organization highlights that 10% of preventable patient harm in healthcare occurs in surgical settings, with a significant portion attributed to the lack of effective visual tools. This underscores the critical need for more advanced and accurate visual aids in surgical procedures.

Oplossing

We've created an intuitive surgical workflow where 2D scans are automatically transformed into holograms and stored in our holographic cloud system. Utilizing AI, we've developed a processing pipeline for the automatic segmentation of relevant anatomical structures. This holographic innovation provides surgeons with accelerated insights, enhancing both preoperative planning and operative care for patients. With our intuitive software the surgeon is able to see the unseen through Augmented Reality glasses (Microsoft HoloLens2) registered on the patient.

Our initial product offering focuses on providing intra-operative assistance through AR/AI software for drain placement ('EVD') in neurosurgical patients. Across Europe and the USA, there are roughly 20,000 neurosurgeons and residents performing these types of surgeries.

In Europe and the USA alone, approximately 310.000 EVD surgeries takes place a year. In 20% of adult brain surgery patients and in 41% of pediatric patients, such EVD's / drains are misplaced. The direct hospital costs per neurosurgical complication average €10.000. With our technology we expect to be able to reduce direct hospital costs with €121M / year in EU and USA.

Organisatie

We have a strong and complementary management team. The three co-founders are an experienced medtech entrepreneur (CEO), a professor in neurosurgery (CMO) and a seasoned software engineer / pioneer (CTO). Currently the team has a headcount of 15. Upon closing our Series A round late 2024 we will scale up the company, with an expected headcount of 160 by 2028.

Our currently available software for surgical preparation is the result of extensive research and testing. For the new intra-operative EVD software a phantom study is ongoing and a first-in-man study is being prepared.

Betrokken partners

Our main academic partners are UMC Utrecht, Princes Maxima Center, Utrecht and University hospital Zurich. They have all provided PhD candidates for our R&D efforts and are facilitating testing opportunities.

Productontwikkeling

Following the market introduction of our EVD product in Q3 2024, our expansion will not only encompass a broader range of surgical specialties for intra-operative visualisation, such as maxillofacial, orthopedic, oncologic, and plastic surgery, but we will also continuously enhance our AI segmentation hub by developing new algorithms for the recognition of anatomical structures. Our moonshot vision is for our software to function as a digital twin for shared decision making, surgical preparation and surgical guidance.

Internationale ambitie

We have strong ties with medical centers in Switzerland and the USA complemented by a dedicated sales manager in the US. Presently, our primary markets are Europe and the USA, with plans to extend our reach to the Asia-Pacific and African regions in the longer term future.
