Probleemstelling

Skin conditions from eczema and acne to skin cancer - are extremely common, yet people often notice changes too late or don't know whether a spot is serious. This leads to both unnecessary worry and dangerously late detection. At the same time, primary care is under pressure: GPs and dermatologists handle many skin-related consultations that could partly be triaged remotely or caught preventively. There is a need for an accessible, reliable way to give people early insight themselves and direct them to a doctor only when it's truly needed.

Oplossing

SkinAI lets people run an instant AI-powered skin analysis from a single photo. The app recognises 62+ dermatological conditions, gives a severity score, and helps determine when a visit to a GP or dermatologist is worthwhile. Users can track and compare skin spots and moles over time (each area gets a unique ID), so subtle changes stand out early. An AI dermatologist chat adds context to the results, and smart reminders keep people proactive. The model was trained in the EU on tens of thousands of dermatologist-annotated images and is fully GDPR-compliant. This lowers the threshold for early detection and self-management - without replacing the doctor.

SkinAI contributes directly to Mission 1 - a healthy lifestyle and living environment / prevention: by making early detection of skin conditions and suspicious moles easier, we promote early identification (including of skin cancer) and health awareness, helping to reduce the overall disease burden.

It also supports Mission 2 - appropriate care in people's own living environment: people receive a first assessment and targeted triage at home. Together, this reinforces VWS's broader goal: helping people live longer in good health and narrowing health inequalities through low-threshold, accessible technology.

SkinAI Lab targets health-conscious consumers who notice a skin change - a new mole, rash, spot, or acne and want a fast, private first assessment before deciding whether to see a doctor. The primary segment is adults 18–55 in regions with limited or slow dermatology access. The global addressable market is large: skin conditions affect ~1.9 billion people worldwide at any time, and dermatologist wait times routinely exceed several weeks. Users engage directly: they photograph the area in-app and receive an instant AI analysis, personalized recommendations, an AI skin-health assistant, and the ability to track changes over time.

Verlaging zorgkosten

SkinAI Lab reduces costs by triaging at the front door. Many in-person dermatology and GP visits are for benign or self-limiting concerns that do not require a clinician. By giving users an instant, informational pre-screening, the app helps low-risk cases self-manage and routes genuinely concerning cases to care earlier — when treatment is cheaper and outcomes are better (early-detected skin cancer is far less costly to treat than advanced disease).
